M K Bhan Mid Career Research Fellowship
This fellowship honors the memory of Padma Bhushan Prof. Maharaj Kishan Bhan, a distinguished pediatrician, esteemed scientist, and former Secretary of DBT and Chairperson of BIRAC, Government of India. Prof. Bhan made significant contributions to Indian public health and revolutionized the biotechnology landscape in the country. His notable achievement includes the development of the indigenous Rotavirus vaccine, which has saved the lives of millions of children in India and worldwide. Prof. Bhan initiated various initiatives to promote research, collaboration, and implementation capacity building in India. He believed in investing in biomedical research and innovation to achieve excellence and leadership in science. Prof. Bhan also dedicated himself to nurturing the next generation of researchers and leaders in the science community of India, aiming to improve public health in the country. To honor Prof. Bhan's legacy and further his goals, Prof. M. K. Bhan Mid-Career Fellowship Program has been instituted by Grand Challenges India (GCI) partners and implemented by GCI at BIRAC.
Aim of the Fellowship:
i) Identifying and supporting outstanding emerging scientific leaders in India to address the country’s most pressing health and development challenges.
ii) Providing opportunities for mid-career researchers to become independent investigators.

  • Eligibility Criteria
  • This Request for Applications (RFA) is open exclusively to Indian researchers. Overseas Citizens of India are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in any branch of Public Health, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Nutrition, or allied areas. Alternatively, applicants with an MD degree and at least fifteen years of work experience in the healthcare sector are also eligible.
  • Applicants should have a full-time regular position in an organization with an established research setup in India. If the applicant does not have a full-time regular position, they must identify a host institute where they propose to conduct the fellowship work. Fellowship costs will be sanctioned to the Fellow through the Host Institution. Eligibility rules for the Host Institute are outlined in Annexure B.
  • Applicants must demonstrate track record of independent funding such as project, program, or fellowship support, in a lead faculty or senior researcher role.
  • Significant contributions to the proposed area of research, including publications, patents, technology/product/software development, or impact on health policy or practice.
  • The proposed work's importance, originality, contribution to knowledge in the field, and impact in India.
  • The proposed work's aim is to improve the quality of life or health for people in India and comparable geographies.
  • The proposed Host Institute must satisfy BIRAC's requirements for legal eligibility. Contact with the Host Institute may be made separately as part of the eligibility/due diligence process.
  • The upper age limit for applicants is 50 years as of the closing date of the application submission.
  • Applicants cannot hold more than one fellowship at any given point in time.

  • Each fellowship will be granted for a period of up to five years (60 months), with funding of up to INR 2.20 crore (approximately US$ 275,000) per fellowship.
  • The maximum allowable amount for the Fellow's salary is INR 2,00,000 per month, with a 10% yearly increment during the fellowship period. If the current drawn salary is less than INR 2,00,000 per month, the fellowship will provide a top-up to bring it to the specified amount.
  • This includes consumables, equipment, accessories, support staff for research, outsourcing, and other associated costs. The percentage allowable for research costs is 20%-30% of the total fellowship amount.
  • Travel/Meeting (Inclusive of International Travel): The allowable percentage for travel and meeting expenses is 4.0% of the total fellowship amount.
  • This includes institute overhead, research contingency, and miscellaneous expenses. Indirect costs should not exceed 10% of the direct cost or the actual expenditure of the respective financial year.
  • Selection Process
    The selection process program involves two key committees:
    1. Area Review Panel:
  • Comprised of experts in relevant fields, this panel evaluates applications based on the proposed Fellow's credentials and capabilities.
  • Initially, applications are scored based on the proposed Fellow's qualifications.
  • The top 75% of applications are then further evaluated based on the proposed research work.
  • The top 20 applications based on combined scores proceed to the next stage.
    2. Steering Committee:
  • This committee oversees the entire fellowship program.
  • The top 20 applications selected by the Area Review Panel are presented to the Steering Committee.
  • The Steering Committee makes the final selection of the three Fellows from the presented applications.
