WTO Essay Award for Young Economists
The WTO Essay Award for Young Economists, established in 2009 by the World Trade Organization (WTO), serves as a platform to strengthen the relationship between the academic community and the WTO, while also fostering excellent research on trade policy and international trade cooperation.
This annual award aims to promote high-quality economic research on topics related to the WTO and its activities. It seeks to reinforce the ties between the WTO and the academic community by recognizing outstanding contributions from young economists. The winner(s) of the award receive a monetary prize of CHF 5,000. In the case of a co-authored manuscript, the prize money is split equally between the authors. The winning paper is formally announced at the European Trade Study Group (ETSG) annual meeting, the largest conference focusing on international trade.

  • The essay
  • The CV of the author(s), specifying current affiliation(s), the academic institution awarding the PhD, the year (or expected year) of the PhD, and the date of birth of the author(s).

    Eligibility Criteria
  • The paper must address issues related to trade policy and international trade cooperation.
  • The author(s) of the paper must possess or be engaged in the completion of a PhD degree. If over 30 years of age, they must be no more than two years past a PhD defense. This requirement applies to all authors of co-authored papers.
  • Essays cannot exceed 15,000 words to be considered for the award.

  • The annual WTO Essay Award provides a prize of CHF 5,000 to the author(s) of the winning essay. If the paper is co-authored, the prize will be equally divided among the authors.
  • The winning paper will be officially announced at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), the largest conference specializing in international trade.
  • The award ceremony will take place on September 12-14, 2024, at Athens University in Greece. The winning author will receive funding to attend the meeting.
