Dream India Educational Scholarship
Dream India Educational Scholarship
This article provides insight into the inception and early activities of DreamIndia, a movement aimed at making a positive impact in the lives of underprivileged children. It began in October 2004 with the idea of offering English classes to children living in slums. Despite not intending to start a movement initially, the initiative grew organically as new ideas emerged. The founders engaged with children playing in a nearby playground, initially encountering apprehension. However, by participating in games and connecting with the children on their level, trust was established. Conversations revealed the children's disadvantaged backgrounds and subpar education from government schools. Recognizing an opportunity to make a difference, the founders proposed weekend English classes, receiving enthusiastic interest from around 15 children. The challenge then became finding a suitable location for the classes. Unable to use their bachelor accommodation, they sought permission from the local government school, just a kilometre away. However, their request was met with resistance from the teachers, citing various reasons, including the absence of the principal.
